Teaching tick safety and awareness of tick-borne illnesses in health and physical education classes gives children a fun, engaging way to learn that staying safe outdoors is part of being healthy and active. Fight the Bite, Virginia curriculum builds students' confidence in identifying ticks, practicing tick-bite prevention skills, and knowing what to do if they find a tick.
Activities align with the Virginia Standards of Learning for Health and Physical Education and support Virginia House Bill 850 by providing teachers with free, accessible school-age educational resources for preventing Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses. Fight the Bite, Virginia was created by Associate Professors in Health and Physical Education (Dr. Katherine Bowman, University of Lynchburg) and Public Health and Health Sciences (Dr. Jenny Hall, Radford University)
