One Health recognizes that the health of people, animals, and the environment is closely connected. These connections shape tick-borne disease risks, including interactions among people, animals, ticks, wildlife, climate, land use, and the environments we share.
Ticks in Virginia uses a One Health approach to bring information about these connections together to better understand local and regional tick-borne disease risks.
Our work draws on human and animal surveillance data, information about tick distribution and pathogens, published research, environmental conditions, exposure patterns, and the lived experiences of people affected by tick-borne diseases.
We believe that bringing these sources together can reveal risks and patterns that may be missed when human, animal, and environmental health are examined separately. This approach also helps us turn complex information into practical, locally relevant education and prevention strategies for communities, healthcare professionals, and other organizations.

Tick species, disease patterns, environmental conditions, and available surveillance data vary across geographic areas. For that reason, we believe tick-borne disease education is most useful when it reflects an audience's location and lived environmental realities.
Ticks in Virginia develops geographically tailored presentations that translate local and regional evidence into meaningful information for:

This approach has informed presentations and professional education in Virginia and other regions, including Appalachia and the 15-county Southeastern North Carolina Environmental Health District.
